Japanese police sword

Found these photos recently of a salty sword that came through my hands about 8 years ago. I don't remember much about it, but the file folder is labled policesword.

Hi Bob,

 

Your sword is indeed a short Japanese Police sword for NCOs and Lieutenants. It has the distinctive Police star on the backstrap at the pommel that is the standard police emblem for these ranks. I notice that your sword also has the circle device on the backstrap "ears" that is only seen on Police swords. I have seen these with leather sword knots as well as yellow cotton knots like the one on your sword. It also looks like the lower suspension band and second ring may have been removed from the scabbard. This was a common way to update the sword when the belt hangers changed from two straps to a single one.
