Awards & Badges to a Luftwaffe 'Beobachter'

I obtained this aviation group from a picker in Germany last year. It came directly from the family of this Luftwaffe NCO who flew as an Observer or "Beobachter" on a German bomber. The Observer designation in the Luftwaffe covered the Navigator & Bombardier crew positions. He was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class, Iron Cross 2nd Class, the Gold Combat Clasp or "Spange" for "Kampsgeswader" -Bomber Groups, and the "Krim" shield, worn on the uniform sleeve for service in the Crimea in Russia. He surely had the "Ostfront Medaille" - Russian Front campaign medal, but this was not on his award pillow. My decision to buy this group was based on the really superb "Beobachterabzeichen" or Observer Badge which is a fine early piece (1940-41) made and hall-marked by the prestigious and prolific firm of C.E. Juncker, Berlin. It is in beautiful condition. The photo shows him wearing his awards and has his name on the back. Unfortunately I have been unable to learn more about his service or exact unit. All the items are vintage originals. Hope you enjoyed seeing this group......Bobgee

Brig - Never thought that it was. I was under the assumption he survived the war but maybe not. I need to try to check that angle. Bob

What a great set. Not everyone that served on the Eastern Front received that medal. There were certain time periods where men did not qualify.

Great grouping!

During the battles for Krim the VIII. Fliegerkorps provided air support. A few of the Kampfgeschwaders involved appear to be KG 2, KG 51, KG 55 and KG 100.

Funeral pillows were still in use postwar especially by the "old timers"

I hope this helps.
