M1869 Austro-Hungarian Cavalry Off Saber

Gents,

I picked up a decent example of the Model 1869 Austro-Hungarian Cavalry Officer saber at a militaria show recently that I thought I would show.

This saber was made by Hugo Weyersberg & Son in Solingen according to the maker markings on the blade ricasso. I could not find this specific marking style but Hugo worked by himself from 1786 to 1817 according to Bezdek. Clearly this sword could not have been made prior to 1869 so it must have been produced while Hugo was working with Stamm from 1817 to 1891, again according to Bezdek. Thus, it appears that this sword was quite early. If anyone has better dates for this maker please let me know.

This sword is nice in that it has a large Austro-Hungarian eagle motif cut out of the basket guard. It seems that these M 1869 mounted swords often had various motifs worked into the pierced guards such as eagles, St. George, etc. as extra embellishments. I put a Hungarian Portepee on it which looks quite at home attached to the guard in the regulation manner.

Great saber with very interesting information on Hugo. I can see there is a lot of information I have to learn. I think I have been missing a lot by not looking up German makers. Thank you for the posting.

Thank you for the kudos gentlemen. When I saw this particular sword I thought the very detailed Austro-Hungarian eagle worked into the guard was beautiful so I had to buy it. I have the definitive book, "With Drawn Sword", on Austrian and Hungarian swords which shows some of these extra-cost embellishments to the sword guards but a collector in Austria told me they are quite scarce in Europe. More scarce than the book would have you believe it seems.

At any rate, here is an uncleaned example of this same M1869 Mounted Officer sword with the standard guard for comparison.
