I had no idea what this was when I bought it. Someone saw my newspaper ad and offered up some old army surplus stuff. I get there and it's lots of the type of surplus favored by scout troops. Oh, he said, any interest in this, and hands over a small box full of TR decorations/insignia with this on the top:

Nice badges, Bob. These are the sew-on version of the metal & enamel award. Both types were worn on the right breast of the tunic, usually on the pocket. The gold version was awarded for combat service. A silver version was awarded for non-combat achievements. The gold badge ranked between the Iron Cross 1st Class and the Knight's Cross. They were accompanied by a document. I have started a thread on the doc. Here's an example of the metal version. Bobgee

Got a silver one in cigar box with broken pin over 40 yrs ago!

 

Have had some nice cloth ones also, but has been a long time since any have showed up!
