stratasfan Posted November 4, 2018 Share #1 Posted November 4, 2018 In German - Das Ehrenkreuz des Weltkriegs. This was the first Imperial German service medal for participation in the Great War. The medal is a Maltese cross with or without crossed swords (depending on the type of award) and has "1914 1918" in the center. the back is completely blank except for a maker's mark. There were three types -- Combatant Veterans, has crossed swords Non-Combatant Veterans, no swords For surviving parents or widows, no swords The ribbons also changed. The red, white and black stripe pattern changed, depending on which of the three awards it was. Here is an example of a Non-Combatant medal:
PaulR Posted November 5, 2018 Share #2 Posted November 5, 2018 A very under appreciated award, if you ask me. I love the non-combattant and widower versions the best.

PaulR Posted December 9, 2018 Share #5 Posted December 9, 2018 They should be appreciated more, for what they represent. I agree! In many cases, they are they the only award received for up to four of the worst years of their lives. This man served through seven years of war and this is all that he received. JohnS3rd Posted December 16, 2018 Share #7 Posted December 16, 2018 The Hindenburg cross for surviving parents or widows was black. Skysoldier80 Posted April 26, 2019 Share #8 Posted April 26, 2019 Thinking of collecting on a budget, this is a great award to collect and very much underappreciated like previously mentioned. There are so many variations (makers) of this award.

Fred Borgmann Posted January 13, 2020 Share #11 Posted January 13, 2020 These medals are common enough to make it affordable to collect them by medal maker and in metal variations.

SARGE Posted May 11, 2023 Share #15 Posted May 11, 2023 A nice, and scarce, next of kin award. Notice the slightly different ribbon with the colors in a different order.
