French dirk with Napoleonic Eagle on langet. The grip is horn. Is this First or Second Empire?

Love Marianne on the pommel! Super cool! Cool length, too. Is that the difference between a dagger and a dirk? I've always wondered. This is mainly a short sword. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Stratasfan,

Early naval dirks from the Revolutionary War to the end of the Napoleonic Wars tended to be long because they were real weapons used in ship to ship fighting. The dirk was often used with the sword in the right hand and the dirk in the left. This British Naval Dirk made by John Knubley, London, who was active at No. 11 Charing Cross (1786-1794). This dirk has a 16” serpentine blade, reeded ivory grip and is marked“Knubley / No. 11 / Charing Cross / London.” Total length: 21”. The drawings show how the dirk was used.

Dick

Oh, thanks for the really fabulous info! I know about the fighting with the two blades! Didn't realize that the short sword was a dirk! Really cool!

Why the serpentine blade shape?
