mikie Posted January 24, 2019 Share #1 Posted January 24, 2019 Figured I'd post my small collection of WWI Austrian soldiers postcards. I picked them up years ago just because I liked them, and have nothing else from Austria in the collection, rather than for any specialized interest. Any experts on the subject that may have any comments about these are more than welcome to comment. I'll start off with 2 that appear to be the same soldier. If anyone can read the backs, I'd love to know what he said. Enjoy! Mikie
mikie Posted January 24, 2019 Author Share #2 Posted January 24, 2019 Here is another photo card. This one is a rather dramatic pose. The date on the back is very early wartime. Any experts are more than welcome to comment. And a translation would be interesting. Enjoy! Mikie
mikie Posted January 24, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted January 24, 2019 Compared to the last guy posing with his saber on a horse, this guy is downright casual. Once again, comments and translations are welcome. Mikie
mikie Posted January 24, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted January 24, 2019 Last one! I promise! For the last time, comments and translations welcome. Thanks for looking and hope you found them of some interest. Mikie
Dr_Rambow Posted January 25, 2019 Share #5 Posted January 25, 2019 Based on the helmet, he appears to be a dragoon. Do you have a higher resolution version showing just the rider? I'd like to look at more details.
mikie Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted January 25, 2019 If I get a chance,I'll take a better scan tomorrow. I Mikie
mikie Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #7 Posted January 25, 2019 Here is the best closeup of the soldier I can put up here. Hope this helps. Thank you for your interest. Mikie
mikie Posted January 25, 2019 Author Share #8 Posted January 25, 2019 Oh and thank you to the moderators for consolidating these all into one thread. I probably would have thought of that myself if not for this lousy cold. Blah. Mikie
SARGE Posted January 26, 2019 Share #9 Posted January 26, 2019 Not enough of the sword to tell for certain but it looks like our mounted Trooper is holding a Model 1845 or a Model 1850 Cavalry Troop's Sabre. It could be as late as the Model 1858 Sabre but it is in that ball park anyway. I hope this is helpful.
Dr_Rambow Posted January 30, 2019 Share #10 Posted January 30, 2019 My vote is for 1858 or 1869 saber; if you look close you can see the extra "step" on the blade which is a reinforcing piece that was added at the hilt (which came out with the 1858 model). Older models were retrofitted, but the fuller would be much closer to the hilt in that case. Thanks for the enlarged image! Great details; it's not that easy to get good images of low ranking cavalry with all of their equipment on. It would be interesting to see what pistol he has, I can't tell what it is. Rather interesting that he has one at all, since those were usually an NCO accessory once you get closer to WWI.
SARGE Posted January 31, 2019 Share #11 Posted January 31, 2019 Dr_Rambow, I think you are right concerning the sword. I was focused on the guard looking for holes and missed the step on the blade ricasso. I can't see his holster either but he is certainly wearing the mounted cross strap rig for mounted troops. One of the two big Steyr semi-autos I am guessing.
