Fred Borgmann Posted February 19, 2019 Share #1 Posted February 19, 2019 Unique Skiing Prize Medal This unique skiing first prize medal is not dated but was issued in 1934. This silver plated bronze medal was awarded to the first place winner of the Watzmann mountain downhill skiing competition just outside of Berchtesgaden in the Bavarian Alps. The medal is an impressive 45.5mm in diameter and weighs 28.9 grams with a plain edge. The obverse shows a skier racing down hill between two small flags. The reverse has the engraved inscription “Watzmann-Abf. (abfahrt) SA u. (und) SS Kl. (Class) 1 Pr. (1st prize) all within an oak wreath. The medal is not named but that could possibly be discovered in local newspapers of that time if any can be found.

Fred Borgmann Posted February 20, 2019 Author Share #3 Posted February 20, 2019 It is interesting to note the mount marks on the skier side of the medal which would indicate that there was once a pin on that side. I am fairly sure the medal was not issued that way. Also of interest is that I purchased the medal in Berchtesgaden in 2005 so it was probably won by a local skier and survived the looting of the town by occupation troops in 1945.
