Vietnam War SKS chest ammo belt?

Ive seen mounds of Chinese ammo belts of this general pattern, but they are greenish cloth, cheap looking, and cheaply constructed. This one is more robust in construction and a khaki color. Reinforcements, green-painted hardware, etc. The only marking I can find is a small circular green stamp (maybe a green star). Any chance this is a VN bring back?

It could be a war trophy, but it would be hard to verify. We did not see many of these since the SKS was pretty much used by the VC and phased out as most NVA units carried the AK-47 and AKM supplied by Red China and the Warsaw Pact Countries. These SKS Ammo carriers held 10 round stripper clips of 7.62 x 39mm ammunition.

Thanks for the info!

It's older based on the color and construction. It is correct for the Vietnam time period.

But it could just as easily be surplus from Vietnam, China, or other countries that used the SKS.

Good enough for a display.

Many thanks, Gil! Works for me. It cost me the princely sum of 10 bucks.

  • 2 years later...

We originally had this thread under the NVA and VC Field Equipment section.

It was pointed out by one of our members that while the NVA and VC used similar ammo pouches, there is no proof here that this particular one was used in Vietnam.

So we will now post this under the section for China, which at a minimum, is most likely its country of origin.
