Air Raid Drill Award

This is one of three pin back awards that came with a Civil Defense Officer uniform. All were pin back and are attached to sewn loops on the tunic breast pocket. This one is a Police award for participation in a pre-war Air Raid Drill. Notice the searchlights seeking out the enemy bombers. Kinda, sorta, did not work quite that way during the actual daylight Doolittle Raid.

Sarge,

These badges usually have the name of the city that issued them and often a date....generally (not always) on the back. Is there anything on the back ? If not on the back, the city emblem may be on the front. I can't see it real good, could that be a emblem at 6 o'clock on the front of the badge?

tiger,

Yes, I thought I had some more pix of this badge when I started this thread but I did not. So, here are some new ones of the front and the back. You can more clearly see the "enemy" biplane bombers caught in the searchlights and the logo at six-o'clock on the front. The single flat pin and catch are clearly seen as well as the extensive writing that is on the back.

BTW, the Civil Defense (Kei-bou-dan) uniform is from Teshikaga in Hokkaido if that helps decipher the badge.

Showa 8 is good information for the 1933 date. I think the central device may be an anti-aircraft cannon but it is not clear. The night time silhouettes of buildings are clearly visible in the central background and perhaps the grid pattern at the bottom is a representation of city streets? A lot of iconography in this badge.
