A swimming pool excavation reveals the remains of the mechanism to raise and lower a disappearing gun.

Never heard of them either, but this is super interesting! I'm going to share this with my Sister, who mostly is interested in the Victorian era. Thanks so much for sharing! Those guns sure must have been something to see in real life!

There is one in San Francisco. One gun from the 1904 Battery Chamberlin has been restored and they allow park visitors to "man the gun". It's pretty neat but it's been a while since I visited it.

The area around the Golden Gate is chock full of old fortifications. It's really cool to hike around the headlands and see the ruins. And the scenery is breathtaking!
