gwb123 Posted April 24, 2019 Share #1 Posted April 24, 2019 A swimming pool excavation reveals the remains of the mechanism to raise and lower a disappearing gun. http://www.bbc.com/travel/gallery/20190423-the-mystery-of-cape-towns-disappearing-gun "Now, nearly 100 years later, the disappearing gun’s reappearance is a reminder of South Africa’s tangled colonial past, and a British war with Russia that never was." stratasfan Posted April 24, 2019 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2019 Never heard of them either, but this is super interesting! I'm going to share this with my Sister, who mostly is interested in the Victorian era. Thanks so much for sharing! Those guns sure must have been something to see in real life! Link to comment
stratasfan Posted April 24, 2019 Share #4 Posted April 24, 2019 Actually, is there one that is complete anywhere? Link to comment
mikie Posted April 24, 2019 Share #5 Posted April 24, 2019 There is one in San Francisco. One gun from the 1904 Battery Chamberlin has been restored and they allow park visitors to "man the gun". It's pretty neat but it's been a while since I visited it. I found this on a quick youtube search... Here is some info on the preservation and visiting the gun. https://www.nps.gov/goga/learn/historyculture/battery-chamberlin-preservation.htm The area around the Golden Gate is chock full of old fortifications. It's really cool to hike around the headlands and see the ruins. And the scenery is breathtaking! Enjoy! mikie Link to comment
