SARGE Posted May 20, 2019 Share #1 Posted May 20, 2019 Gents, Here is an example of the blue cloth Police peaked cap worn by regular Japanese Policemen. It has a blue top with a blue band and black bound visor. The cap has a functional black leather chin strap and in this case the strap is secured by two small Police insignia in the form of a five pointed star. Some straps are secured with buttons. This same police star insignia is seen in the gold bullion wreath worn on the front of the cap. Rank ranges are indicated on the cap by way of gold wire bands that go around the band of the cap. In this instance the single gold bullion stripe shows the rank of the wearer is in the Inspector range.

SARGE Posted May 22, 2019 Author Share #4 Posted May 22, 2019 It is hard to date these caps as they continued in wear well after the end of the war. Caps from at least the 1920s until 1945 generally had leather chin straps and bound visors like this one. They also used natural materials in their construction such as leather and wicker. The rank is shown by gold wire stripes sewn onto a cloth band (not the cap itself) which fits over the cap band for senior officers like this one. Postwar caps often incorporate plastic in the construction as well as having plastic chin straps or visors. Japanese policemen normally wear "Ball cap" style caps today. Here is a view of Metropolitan Tokyo Police uniforms and caps in the 1920s.
