ArtyScout Posted July 28, 2019 Share #1 Posted July 28, 2019 Well I decided to go onto the high seas for my next project. It will be Academy's Admiral Graf Spee in 1/350 scale and I WILL be using as much PE as possible that I can put together. I hope my nerves can stand it. lol. My only complaint about the kit is that the Kriegsmarine flags are sans swastikas. Which kind of kills the authenticity. I did order some 1/350 flags that are fabric but they are the large "In Port flags". But I'm checking period photos to see if how I want to display this model will require their 'engagement flags'. Also I will be putting the ship in water. I can take a plane on the ground but I just can't see a ship out of water; maybe its because I think of it as a fish? I will try to keep you abreast of my progress as I go along. Wish me luck. Semper Fi. Manny
Proud Kraut Posted July 28, 2019 Share #2 Posted July 28, 2019 Hi Manny, so you did it! Great, I will follow up your progress very closely because I intend to build a water model next as well. Could we see 1-2 pictures of the sprues? Lars
The Meatcan Posted July 28, 2019 Share #3 Posted July 28, 2019 Manny, this will be quite interesting to watch your build. A ship, in water no less, will be a real change of pace for our modeling forum. I’m hoping your Graf Spee ends up in better shape than the real ship! mikie Posted July 28, 2019 Share #4 Posted July 28, 2019 This should be an interesting one. I don't recall seeing you do a ship before. Your projects are always cool to watch I progress.

Hey Mikie, I hope this kit comes out OK. I'm kind of in uncharted waters. BTW if you check out USMilitaria Forum there is a 1/700 USS Oldendorf which I made for & with my grandson. Its a Spruance Class Destroyer. That was my first time doing my water technique. Semper Fi. Manny
ArtyScout Posted July 29, 2019 Author Share #6 Posted July 29, 2019 Hello All, as per Lars' request I took a couple of pics of the sprues, although they are still in the plastic. It comes off tonight. From what I've noticed, this is an excellent kit, exquisitely molded with no flash. Academy really outdid themselves in producing this kit. I will use PE where I want the extra detail, but if I can save myself some headaches, I will. Semper Fi. Manny

ArtyScout Posted August 8, 2019 Author Share #10 Posted August 8, 2019 Hey everyone, its been a slow go as I was masking the hull and painting and finding out that sometimes the "painters" tape takes off some of the primer that you had masked. But the hull is painted, it needs some tweaking, The main deck is painted but as I put pieces on I might have to retouch and I'm learning that I won't be using all of the PE parts. Like Mikie said: "Look at all those tiny parts!" BTW besides the PE cutting & bending tools I also have a flat pair of pliers. Semper Fi. ArtyScout Posted August 16, 2019 Author Share #12 Posted August 16, 2019 Hey guys, I'm sorry this is a slow build since I'm uncharted waters, but its coming along. I'm almost done with the hull. You know it will get tweaked. LOL. Here are some more progress pics. Semper Fi. Manny

ArtyScout Posted August 25, 2019 Author Share #16 Posted August 25, 2019 Hello everyone! I've got some work done on the ship. I've decided to go with the original plastic railing on the superstructure and funnel, although I might still put the PE railing around the ship; we'll see. The railing is very delicate and I can be a bit of a klutz. I like modeling as a labor of love, not hard labor. I did get the FDC forecastle done, the main and secondary guns. So I'll keep you posted as I make progress. Semper Fi. Manny
Proud Kraut Posted August 25, 2019 Share #17 Posted August 25, 2019 I like modeling as a labor of love, not hard labor. I can only second that! Superstructure and the guns are looking good. Excuse my ignorance. What's that silver "gun"? Looks a bit like an old muzzle-loader or a harpoon?
ArtyScout Posted August 25, 2019 Author Share #18 Posted August 25, 2019 Hey Lars, Thanks for the comments. As for the deck gun, its supposed to be a single barreled anti-aircraft gun but it is a little thick. Nothing I can do about that. What I will do is darken the color of it. Semper Fi. ArtyScout Posted August 31, 2019 Author Share #20 Posted August 31, 2019 OK some WIP pics. It's been a slow go, but now after the Labor Day holiday I hope to be moving along on this ship. I already have my stuff ready for my next diorama. As always; all comments and critiques are greatly appreciated. BTW I'm glad that I decided to stay with the plastic railings. But I still haven't made up my mind with the deck railings. Semper Fi. Manny

ArtyScout Posted September 12, 2019 Author Share #23 Posted September 12, 2019 Well I've made some headway on the superstructure/bridge and smoke funnel. I'll post some more when I attach it to the ship. Slowly but surely its coming along. BTW I'm glad that I went with the model's railings. Semper Fi. ArtyScout Posted September 15, 2019 Author Share #25 Posted September 15, 2019 Well I added the forward bridge superstructure to the deck along with the main and secondary guns. The guns are not glued in place but I wanted to get an idea of the progress. I've used Tamiya Smoke for the windows and shadowing and so far so good. Enjoy the pics and any critiques or comments are greatly appreciated. Semper Fi. Manny
