Are any of these flags legit?

Hi Stony,

It’s impossible to tell whether the flags are WW2 vintage from those tiny pics. Are you able to verify if you see them in person?

Assuming they’re legit he’s asking full market value. Check the ‘Fortunes of War’ web site for some guaranteed examples and compare. I’d also ask the seller for some references, if he’s a dealer or established collector he’s been in contact with others in the collecting community.

I did a little translating on the following for fun, without offering an opinion:

No 1: Flag is dedicated to: 大村 Oomura, ?磨 (first kanji eludes me) 君 Kun

No 2: Pre ’45 horizontal writing read right to left:

Top: 武運長久 continued luck in the fortunes of war

Right side: Flag is dedicated to: Last name: 鶴崎 Tsurusaki

Bottom: 心身健全 mental and physical health

Left side: 八幡 Yawata City

No 3. 大和 Ookazu or Tomokazu 勝武 Katsutake 士君

Items I’d avoid to be safe:

No 6. Pretty awful, seems to me to be done by one person

No 7. Suspicious of all those shrine stamps, would need to have someone knowledgeable give an opinion.

No 9. Pretty sure this is a post war souvenir hachimachi

No 10. Probably post war Rising Sun and Hinomaru one piece - 2 flags

Cheers, Rod

Stony,

The photos are not the best to be used to make an informed opinion before buying. At a glance many look to be ok but you really need better pictures before jumping. However, Flag #3 (for me) is a real problem and pictures 13/14 are the same flag. Some of the insignia is post war as are a few of the other items. The prices seem to be top dollar for very ordinary items. You may have to do a lot more research before moving on any of these.

100% agree with John on this one. Flag # 3 was all done by the same person and, in my opinion, that person was not Japanese. Looks like a "Sea Bee" flag to me.

For those who don't know, the Seabees had their own Japanese flag factories:
