Leo Posted August 16, 2019 Share #1 Posted August 16, 2019 This Tanto was purchased back in 2004 from the Kunz family. The Tanto was recovered by Sgt. Walter Kunz of Ohio, he was part of the US 34th Infantry. Walter enlisted on 3rd June 1941, after the battle of Leyte Walter was assigned the duty of checking the Japanese dead for intelligence, he soon found a dead Japanese colonel with this Knife and the photo of himself tucked away on his person, Walter liberated these items from him and brought them home. Walter passed away in 2003 and these items where purchased from his son in 2004. The Tanto is made out of Japanese cherry wood, with ivory ends. The blade is super sharp still after all years, and it was custom for high ranking officers to carry these suicide knives to perform sepukku instead of capture.
