Fortunes Of War

I don't know if this has been pointed out but I wanted to take a brief moment and thank Bob Chatt for dedicating this section of the World Militaria Forum to John Egger. A number of people were fortunate to have met John, either in person or over the internet. He had a quick wit, a gift for gab and the ability to make anyone feel as though he had been their friend forever. More importantly, however, was his love for this hobby. John typified a real unselfishness when it came to sharing his vast knowledge about Japanese militaria and many of us are better off in what we know and what we own, because of his insight. It's hard to imagine, when I see John's comments posted here that he is gone but Bob's naming of this Forum thread in honor of John will hopefully keep his memory alive for a long, long time to come.

Mike- It was he least I could do for someone so out in front of the Japanese collecting community and to our friend.

I agree with Mike, thank you Bob.

i never actually met John in person, but we corresponded frequently on many topics. His sense of humour was brilliant, and his knowledge of Japanese headgear was second to none. He always took the time to give detailed answers to questions posed, nothing was ever too much trouble. His love of Halloween and ice hockey were often topics we discussed. When talking about my golf, he would sometimes say “you didn’t play well today - I found your ball in the yard”.

I imagine everyone who knew John would have similar stories - he will be missed.

Regards

Russ

It's odd right now as we get closer to the SOS.

I was pulling some merch to ship and found a whole pile of photos that I had put aside for John, and to have it hit hard that he won't be there is really tough.....

I can relate! As was usual for me, I would arrive at Louisville a day ahead of John and Dean and check into the hotel. We would meet the following morning over breakfast and then go over and pick up our packets, etc. That part will be the same, except it will only be Dean and I this time. We used to "fake" argue over who had what bed in the room too. It was all just a joke really as John would always set himself up on the floor, next to the bed that was the farthest from the front door. He said that he did that because of his days in Vietnam......Dean would always be closest to the door. John would joke that no one was coming through Dean.....that was if Dean could be awakened!
