Wish to Verify Promotion to Captain via L.G. Entry

Recommended Posts

Hello Gent's, This is my initial Post here, although I'm a long time member of the USMF. I'm seeking to confirm / verify the official far of a British Officer's promotion from Lieutenant ( 1st ), to Captain, but haven't had much success. Although I have managed to locate numerous L.G. entries pertaining to him, I've yet to find the entry I'm really looking for. I'm 98.5% certain that he was promoted but I really do need to confirm the DATE date & L.G. Entry data. If anyone would be kind enough to assist me with this issue, I'd be deeply appreciative. THANKS Guy's, & Happy Holidays to all. >>> The Officer in question was; LIEUTENANT George CRAIG,M.B.E., of York, U.K.

( Born 03 May 1888, in U.K. ) His final assignment prior to retirement was with the 2nd Battalion, of 'The Border Regiment', based on County Mayo, Ireland. ( From appox. Feb. 1920 - Feb. 1922 ) If any additional information is needed to help with the search, please just let me know & I'll get it out to you ASAP. THANK YOU Folks, & Happy Holidays to all.

Best regards, Dom Pastore Jr.

Is it possible that he was granted the Honorary rank of Captain when he retired ?

As a side note - the attached link refers to the actions of a Lt Craig Border Regiment in Ireland in 1921. This action appears to have resulted in his award of the MBE. [Apologies if you have already seen it]

I will see if I can find anything else.

A little more

Ancestry UK has 2 possible references.

1. G . Craig in the UK, British Army Lists, 1882-1962

Name: G . Craig
Military Year: 1940
Regiment: The RegimentBorder
Rank: Lt

2. G . Craig in the UK, British Army Lists, 1882-1962

Name: G . Craig
Military Year: 1941
Regiment: The RegimentBorder
Rank: Retired Officer re-employed

This is a link to the 1941 Army List which shows him as a Lieutenant on retired pay.

The only other reference I could find was relating to correspondence between him and Ibberson in 1956

Hi Dom -- I have found the latest entry in the Gazette from 3 Jun 1922 referring to his retirement with rank of Lieutenant.

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32722/page/4721

https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/32715/page/4246

And then in 1938:

Unfortunately this does not confirm rank of Captain, but perhaps they're new pieces of information.

Thanks,

Rob

THANK YOU so very much Guy's, I really appreciate it ! I've been digging through that darn L.G. Website, & it appears that sometimes it works, something it doesn't. I did get some of the above noted hits, although not all. And yes, he was the individual mentioned in the May 3, 1921 IR A ambush in County Mayo, aka "The Tourmakeady Affair". Both he, & Lieut. Ibberson received M.B.E.'s for their actions that day, & it's Craig's M.B.E. which has prompted my search for information about him. Craig's M.B.E. was named to him ( unofficially, of course ), & it is named to him as a Captain. I'm currently waiting on some documentation from a previous owner / collector, & am hopeful that there will be something within the file to confirm his Captain's rank. So basically, that's where I'm at until I received the incoming data, and or someone make's a big hit on the Web. Honestly, I just can't see either Crag, and or a devious collector / seller putting an incorrect rank on a relatively low priced medal ? I really doesn't make sense any way you look at it ? Soooooo, I guess I wait !!! Hopefully my package should arrive tomorrow sometime, & maybe, just maybe the riddle will be solved. Info really like this medal, as from what I've seen, not all that many decorations appear on the market from those early years of the conflict.THANKS again,

Best, Dom / dpast32@aol.com
