This is a cased example of the West German Verdienstkreuz with ribbon made by Steinhauer & Luck. This Federal Republic of Germany Service Cross is the companion piece to the identical pin back "Officers Cross". There is a lower class service medal that is struck on a round disc suspended from a ribbon and a higher class Knights Cross that is worn at the neck on a ribbon or on a sash. This service cross was instituted in the 1950s and can be given to both military and civil awardees. This is a one sided red enamel cross with a gold metal back and it is worn above the left breast pocket of the uniform on its ribbon. The black federal Republic eagle is shown in closeup as they differ slightly depending upon the manufacturer. Notice the accompanying case with the maker marking on the back.
