stratasfan Posted December 28, 2018 Share #4 Posted December 28, 2018 Love Marianne on the pommel! Super cool! Cool length, too. Is that the difference between a dagger and a dirk? I've always wondered. This is mainly a short sword. Thanks for sharing!

Kanemono Posted December 29, 2018 Author Share #6 Posted December 29, 2018 Hi Stratasfan, Early naval dirks from the Revolutionary War to the end of the Napoleonic Wars tended to be long because they were real weapons used in ship to ship fighting. The dirk was often used with the sword in the right hand and the dirk in the left. This British Naval Dirk made by John Knubley, London, who was active at No. 11 Charing Cross (1786-1794). This dirk has a 16” serpentine blade, reeded ivory grip and is marked“Knubley / No. 11 / Charing Cross / London.” Total length: 21”. The drawings show how the dirk was used. stratasfan Posted December 29, 2018 Share #7 Posted December 29, 2018 Oh, thanks for the really fabulous info! I know about the fighting with the two blades! Didn't realize that the short sword was a dirk! Really cool! Why the serpentine blade shape?
Kanemono Posted December 31, 2018 Author Share #8 Posted December 31, 2018 This dagger/dirk is Second Empire (presidency, because the eagle is not crowned) 1848/1852
