Prussia, Friedrich Wilhelm III Death Medal
At first glance this does not look like a military medal. It looks more like a bare bones death medal with the king’s standard portrait and a plain reverse lacking any design. Other death medals for FWIII in 1840 have beautiful designs. This one is .900 fine silver, 45mm in diameter and weighs 51.17 grams which is larger than the double thalers circulating in Prussia that year. This medal in silver is a rare special issue just for the late king’s Guard Du Corps which numbered about 85 men. It’s simplicity of design would have made the frugal Fredrick the Great smile.

I can also add that there is a gold version of this medal for family members and very high ranking officials and also a bronze version for the lower levels.
