Gents,

This is an example of the 1889 Naval Prison & Shore Patrol sword authorized on 18 March 1889 (Meiji 22). The hilt is similar to the Police Bureau swords and the hilt is made of brass with a leather grip. The machine made traditional style blade is secured to the grip with a brass bolt that transfixes the grip. Examples with hand made blades will be found secured with mekugi. Instead of a Police star on the pommel these swords have a fouled anchor engraved on the back of the pommel There is a similar fouled anchor that is engraved on the obverse scabbard drag area of the nickel plated steel scabbard that has two suspension rings.

The Naval regulations were modified in 1895 to expand this single sword to three different sword styles for Guards, Chief Guards, & Wardens, The 1895 regulations kept this sword as it was except the engraved fouled anchors were removed from the design. So, this example is a sword that was regulation for all Japanese Naval Police ranks for a period of six years.

Thanks for the kudos Tony. This sword came with the original leather sword knot attached to the hilt in the proper manner.
