RAB Posted September 27, 2019 Share #1 Posted September 27, 2019 Picked this helmet up, looks like a regular German eagle shield on the one side but on the other there looks to be evidence of some decal that was scratched off? Not sure what that could be. No history on this helmet.
daskrieg Posted September 27, 2019 Share #2 Posted September 27, 2019 Originally German helmets had two decals. The Eagle on one side and a national tri color shield on the other.
skybear70 Posted September 27, 2019 Share #3 Posted September 27, 2019 The responce by Daskrieg is correct. Following lessions learned during the Polish campaign in 1939, the German HIgh Command directed on 21 March 1940 that in addition of applying a rough matt field grey texture to the exterior stahilhelm, that the tri-colored national emblem previously applied to the right side of the helmet would cease, and furthur instructed that this decal should be removed from allexisting helmets already in service. There were many instances where the last part of this directive was ignored, but it apprars that your helmet did in fact comply with the field order, having the tri-colored decal removed. Bugme Posted September 28, 2019 Share #5 Posted September 28, 2019 This would be similar to what was on your helmet.
