Brian Keith Posted December 2, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 2, 2019 Ive had these for many years, picked up in the late 80s-early 90s, when tons of ex-Soviet military was readily available in the US. The first example is heavy and well made, a nice one, but common enough. Ill show both sides. It is numbered: 638201. Ill post the second in the next thread, Thanks for looking. Brian Keith Posted December 2, 2019 Author Share #2 Posted December 2, 2019 This second example is a bit of a head scratcher. It must have been altered from the original issue form. There is no enamel and the USSR and the Soviet Hammer and Sycle insignia has been carefully removed. Im speculating, but I wonder if it was done by an awardee that was in a country that was under Soviet control, after the break-up of the Soviet Union? Possibly the awardee was proud of his service to earn the award, but didnt want it associated with the Soviet Union. I think the number is: 2535506. Anybody seen an example like this? Thanks for looking Comments welcome. BKW
S.ChrisKelly Posted September 26, 2023 Share #3 Posted September 26, 2023 Paul J. Schmitt's "Echoes of War: Researching Soviet Military Decorations," [Historical Research/Lorton, Virginia/2006] shows: Page 117: Order of the Red Star #638305 awarded to a member of the 99th Rifle Division on 16 April 1944. Page 121: Orders of the Red Star, #2538471 & #2538477, awarded on 8 June 1945 & 7 October 1945 respectively. Your Order of the Red Star # 2535506 has all the enamel removed, completely filed down and de-Sovietized. Never seen this before.
