Bob Hudson Posted June 9, 2020 Share #1 Posted June 9, 2020 This came in a batch of German bayonets and daggers brought home by a US vet of the 78th Division. This has a 9.5 inch blade, checkered grips, but no maker's name and no quillon.
SARGE Posted June 9, 2020 Share #2 Posted June 9, 2020 Hi Bob, You have a walking out dress version of the standard German S84/98 bayonet called an Extra-Seitengewehr S84/98. These were a slow moving private purchase style of dress bayonet so some makers sold them as a "Pioneer" model bayonet and that is what collectors generally call them. They were made with both short and long blades like the more popular selling Extra-Seitengewehr KS98 that collectors usually see. These have been reproduced but yours is an original. One of the things to always check on these bayonets is that the end of the quillon on the guard has not been cut off. There should be plating on the nose of the eagle head pommel and the end of the guard on original examples. These can be seen in my book. "Seitengewehr: History of the German Bayonet 1919-1945" and in period maker catalogs. Here are a couple of examples.
