Unknown German hat

Can anyone identify this hat? This was a bring back item that came directly from a family member. The hat eagle has come off all the pins are broke off the back and the chin strap is missing.  Any information would be appreciated.

I can’t comment on originality, I know there are some fakes of these floating around, but it is a SA Brownshirt “coffee ca” political hat worn in the 1930’s. The color will denote the “gau” or region if I remember correctly. I am certainly not an expert in this area, but that info should help you start some research or until someone who know more can chime in.

Thank you for the input,  that is what I was thinking it could be also, I'm just not very knowledgeable with the German headgear.  I am having trouble finding another example that matches this one exactly most are very similar just can't seem to find one the same.  As far as originality I'm fairly confident that it is original unless they were making replicas during the war when this one was mailed back to the US. It was acquired directly from a member of the 101st Airborne 321st GFAB, and was with many other German items. As with everything else the reserach continues.

Good luck John, might try Wehrmacht Awards forum if you are a member there. Better photos of the inside and some close ups are in order to get a thumbs up on originality. I think there were dozens of different body colors and different piping designs on these. I don't have a reference to help identify unfortunately. The story from where it came from sounds optimistic.

It is called a 'Kepi', It was also during the 1930s that the SA began using uniform colors to denote an SA member's Gruppe (Division) to which the SA member belonged. The unit color was worn on the front of the kepi cap as well as rank and unit collar patches. The marking system - patches/kepi color combined with gold or silver buttons/pips - would eventually expand to cover these SA divisions; as of 1937

Thanks for posting that info, that is exactly what I was looking for, I had come across that color chart once before but couldn’t find it again. I’m guessing these aren’t the most common hats around?
