Fortunes Of War

All sorts of everyday items were used to remind people that they had a patriotic duty to support the war.  This colorful wooden fan is a good example of a common patriotic item that someone might have frequently used.  The front of the fan displays a postcard sized, black and white photo of a popular Japanese actress of the day (perhaps she is Takamine Mieko).  She is surrounded by what appears to be a spray of carnations. Stenciled around her at the 12-3-6-9 o’clock positions are brightly painted blue, green and orange flowers. The reverse of the fan displays a grouping of red painted stars and the popular slogan Buun Chokyu or “May Your Military Fortunes Be Long Lasting”. This is the slogan most often seen placed upon Good Luck Flags or across 1000 Stitch Belts.
