Just got this gorgeous Type 89 Knee Mortar and seeking any operating manual/nomenclature, etc.

Would love to acquire an original Japanese manual for display but also any links to operating info appreciated.

Small tab just beneath barrel that I cannot figure out the use or movement of -- see pic 3, lower left

Otherwise, it operates beautifully; no rust, no damage.

thanks

Nice looking knee mortar!  The bluing still looks pretty nice and I see that it still has the burlap intact; do you have any rounds for it?  If you are talking about that little knob just below the barrel, that's the range adjustment knob.  If there are any old "Banzai" guys around there, I'm sure they could lead you to a manual.  In the meantime, here are a couple of links with some great information.

Here is a link to Peter Harmsen's 2014 guest article on the Japanese Knee Mortar.  I would have posted it all, but there are many photos and the piece is lengthy.  You should find much of what you need here:

Wikipedia Article is good too:

Thanks!  I do have a beautiful round for it.

The bit I was referring to is small, on the opposite side, just below the tube.  I think it may be a release to unscrew the tube because the info I have shows it broken down into three parts: tube, "stem" and foot.

I read the wiki article, which led me to others, but now will read Hamsen's piece.

One site offers all kinds of reprint manuals, but not this guy, only the previous generation, Type 10, I believe...

publisher@military-info.com

here's another with all kinds of info on IJA: http://www3.plala.or.jp/takihome/

and:  https://www.ibiblio.org/hyperwar/Japan/IJA/HB/HB-9.html#II

Still searching for that manual, Japanese is fine, just for display.

Taki is a good guy and his articles are well researched.  He provided me with some translations years ago when I was working on my first book.  He is helpful and might respond if you write him directly.  His English is quite good and it looks like you can contact him via his website/listing of articles.
