Otter42 Posted July 12, 2021 Share #1 Posted July 12, 2021 Friend of mine has this rifle and bayonet that his grandfather brought back. I hadn't seen one without a Mum before. I know very little about Japanese items. Please id type of rifle and writing, thanks much, Ken

jangle Posted July 13, 2021 Share #4 Posted July 13, 2021 This is a training rifle. NOT meant to fire live ammunition!
Otter42 Posted July 13, 2021 Author Share #5 Posted July 13, 2021 Jangle, Can you explain how you can tell that it's a trainer? Will it accept a live round? Thanks much, Ken
lambo35 Posted July 14, 2021 Share #6 Posted July 14, 2021 It should have a smooth bore = trainer. Izawa built several different configurations of training rifles, single shot, repeaters, cap rifles and blank firing rifles. They also had a sub contract under Nagoya supervision to manufacture a type 99, series 4 in 7.7 cal. The pictured type 38 trainer was built to shoot blanks. Chuck. jangle Posted July 14, 2021 Share #8 Posted July 14, 2021 Lambo35's got it right. It looks to be in very nice, above average condition for a trainer.
St.Lukas Posted July 14, 2021 Share #9 Posted July 14, 2021 Just pull the bolt and you’ll see it’s smooth bore without rifling
