Japanese Flag - What Era

Fortunes Of War

You have asked one of the toughest questions to answer!  A plain, unsigned Japanese meatball flag from the World War Two era looks virtually the same as one made twenty years ago.  Some people will say that because the flag has grommets in the corners, it is not World War Two vintage; that has not been my experience.  The caveat to that is the grommets are usually made from brass... but some are steel.  Your flag has shiny metal grommets, so it's likely that it is of a more modern vintage.  The only way to feel good about whether a Japanese national flag comes from the period of the War, is if it came with other items that date it to that timeframe.  Sorry I couldn't help you out any better on that one.

No worries.  I was more interested in shiny vs not shiny.  I think aluminum oxidizes over time, so I wouldn't think they would be that bright after a minimum of 76 years.
