WWI Trench knife, WWII bring back

I recently picked up a lot of WWII bring back items and among them was this WWI German trench knife (boot knife) that was picked up during WWII and modified by someone.  (most likely the GI who brought it home)  The plexiglass most likely came from a destroyed aircraft window.
