By the way, anyone know that Irish Formation Sign is for?

Although it it true that the photo is of a private of the 58th Reserve Infantry Battalion the formation sign on the left sleeve is not that of the 58th Battalion (which would be on the right sleeve). This formation sign (known as a "flash" in the Irish Army) is that of The Western Command.  The design was introduced in 1955.  In the reorganization of 1998 this same badge became the formation sign of the 4th (Western) Brigade.  The brigade was disbanded in the reorganization of 2012 and the badge is now no longer worn.
