Fortunes Of War Posted January 19, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 19, 2022 This is a Kanto Army Winter Hat with pull down ear flaps. It is definitely on the rarer side and includes a maker's label (Hoten) on the inside. A POW camp was located in Hoten (Manchuria), now Shenyang, during the War. The infamous Japanese Unit 731 also performed medical experiments at the camp. Overall, good condition.
Scarecrow Posted January 20, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 20, 2022 That is the Manchukuo Army badge cap badge, correct? A little out of my area but does Kanto Army = Manchukuo Army? Either way an absolutely awesome and rare cap. Thanks for showing.
Fortunes Of War Posted January 21, 2022 Author Share #3 Posted January 21, 2022 Scarecrow- Yes, you are correct. Once the Japanese took over Manchuria and set up their puppet government, this badge was used. Here is the introduction to an article on the subject found in Wikipedia: "The Manchukuo Imperial Army was the ground force of the military of the Empire of Manchukuo, a puppet state established by Imperial Japan in Manchuria, a region of northeastern China. The force was primarily used for fighting against Communist and Nationalist guerrillas in Manchukuo but also took part in battle against the Soviet Red Army on several occasions. It initially consisted of former National Revolutionary Army troops of the "Young Marshal" Zhang Xueliang who were recruited after the Japanese invasion of Manchuria en masse, but eventually expanded to include new volunteers and conscripts. The Imperial Army increased in size from about 111,000 troops in 1933 to an estimated strength of between 170,000 and 220,000 soldiers at its peak in 1945, being composed of Han Chinese, Manchus, Mongols, Koreans, Japanese, and White Russians. Throughout its existence the majority of its troops were considered to be mostly unreliable by their Japanese officers and advisers, due to poor training, equipment, and morale."
