Capt.Case Posted February 26, 2022 Share #1 Posted February 26, 2022 This is the only German helmet I have ever owned as I am a knife guy. I got it from a co-worker years ago who's uncle was in WW II. I am trying to determine if it is Army or Kriegsmarine. It has a sharp edge, not rolled. The eagle decal looks very gold however the helmet appears to have been coated with a shellacked which I think could alter the color. Wondering if there is any way to tell by the design of the Eagle or features on the helmet. Thank you, Capt. Case
Strawberry 9 Posted February 26, 2022 Share #2 Posted February 26, 2022 That is an M42 helmet with I believe a Heer decal.
Preppy Picker Posted February 26, 2022 Share #3 Posted February 26, 2022 Army decals that were applied with shellac have a tendency to get a gold tinge to them. A true KM decal is very very gold. This helmet looks Army to me.
Capt.Case Posted February 26, 2022 Author Share #4 Posted February 26, 2022 Thank you , I appreciate the help. I have had an offer on it but I'm trying to determine what it is before I sell it as I know the Kriegs brings more.
Tom Kibler Posted March 11, 2022 Share #5 Posted March 11, 2022 It is a Heer. As stated, decals were usually lacquered & over time, they patina & tone, giving a golden hue. Nice M42!
Capt.Case Posted March 11, 2022 Author Share #6 Posted March 11, 2022 Thank you. Do you know if there was any difference between the Eagle's style between the Kriegs and the Heer or were they identical except for color?
Mr.Jerry Posted March 11, 2022 Share #7 Posted March 11, 2022 eagle was the same, but decal is actually different where you can see the gold layer. You will find a great example of this currently on Ken site here: https://www.germanhelmetsinc.com/original-helmets/
