KevinBeyer Posted June 7, 2022 Share #1 Posted June 7, 2022 Leopold II created the Order in 1897 as King of the Independent Congo Free State, and later, in 1908, it was incorporated into the Belgian awards system. It was awarded for distinguished artistic, literary or scientific service in the commercial or industrial field or for long service to the country or in Africa. It is awarded in the following classes: Grand Cross Grand Officer Commander Officer Knight two Palms (gold and silver), and three medals (gold, silver and bronze). A Decree of February 14, 1939 authorized crossed swords to be displayed on the ribbon drape by veterans who received this Order. This applied to the Orders of Leopold I and Leopold II, as well. stratasfan Posted June 24, 2022 Share #2 Posted June 24, 2022 Thought I'd share some pics I have of one. This is a full-size example from a collector in France. (Thanks, Kevin, for the fabulous threads on Belgian medals!)
