Saved this field cap from the trash and I just wanted to know what it actually is. Can’t find anything that looks like this anywhere. Looks like one of those m43 caps from ww2 but nobody would through that in the trash. There are some marking on the inside and the numbers are 526. If anyone knows what this is let me know thanks.

It also might be a Burgmütze (mountain cap) because of what looks like a shorter bill/visor on it (although I am not saying this is a WWII or TR cap, Burgmützen were also used after the war as well). M-43 caps (and their copies) have longer bills/visors on them; Burgmützen are characteristically shorter. Also, good observation by Pretty Picker above (regarding the piping); some Bundeswehr caps were also trimmed that way, and polizei too (this cap does not look like polizei green though).

What sort of sweatband does it have, if any?

And you may be surprised by what people throw away sometimes. One person's trash can be another person's treasure.

EDIT: The correct spelling of mountain cap is Bergmütze, not Burgmütze. And Bergmützen is the plural of course. This is what happens when I type too fast...

Here is a better picture of the inside.

An interesting cap.  I agree that the piping is not WWII Polizei related.  Not Police regulation and the green color is too dark.  Zoll, Jaeger, or Bundeswehr (BGS) are possible.  It is a winter cap with quilted lining and the visor does look to be the short mountain cap style.

These large rubber stamped numbers can also be inventory numbers for the Czech Film Studios.  I have seen these before in Praha when many film costumes were released from state ownership in the '90s.  I think these are the give-away.  These uniforms were a mix of original and reproduction uniforms so your cap could be either IMHO.

The price was right.

Thanks for all this information. The piping also looks like the piping grenadiers would have.

This is not a military hat.

A Army bergmutz or M43 does not have piping other than silver for an officer.

No it can have piping other than silver if it was a Zoll cap. Zoll caps would have dark green piping like this one.

Schreck,

That’s what I said in post #2 and I’ll add that it’s a customs mountain cap. What time period it’s from I don’t know.  Nice find.

It looks like a well ~ made reproduction of an M43 feldmütze.

It doesnt look like a reproduction at all, I would think just post WWII
