There are no designations as far as I know so I just call these the "4 pocket", "1st type", or "early" work uniform. The tags literally just say "work uniform top/bottom."

I've seen people claim that the JGSDF used US supplied uniforms and equipment when they first began but that isn't actually true. While some US supplied uniforms did exist, the combat uniforms all appear to have been manufactured domestically from 1950 onwards.

Here are two different examples of the 1st type work uniform top. These stayed in use as the general utility top until the Type 65 work uniform began to be issued in 1965.

An interesting note is that although the top is based on the cut of American field jackets, the shirt was meant to be a utility top. Which is interesting when contextualized against the IJA Type 98 uniform. The IJA ended with a 4 pocket uniform top and the NPR/JGSDF began with a 4 pocket uniform top.

Two examples of the trousers. Later production of both the tops and bottoms implemented simplifications to the design. In the case of the trousers, the bellow on the cargo pockets was replaced by a false bellow.
