Japanese Medal Box?

Is this a Japanese Medal Box? Also wondering what is ink stamped on the side. It's about 3 1/4 inches on each side. Thanks! Kim

I found out it's not a medal box nor military related so can be removed.

Small wooden boxes like this were used for Japanese awards but they were also used for other things.  Small items such as jewelry, cords, various pins and insignia, etc. were placed in boxes like this.

Yep,  I had a person attempt to read the writing on the box. Some symbols were not clear to him but he got enough out of it to suggest the box contained some sort of drum related small parts
