In addition to what Rich has posted: 4 years after the end of WW I the German cash value collapsed. As a result a hyperinflation came up in 1922/1923 (e.g. 100 billions Mark bills did exist). Finally the official paper money lost it´s worth completely. To keep the (local) economy running also many German counties and cities started to produce their own local money, the so called "Notgeld".
