Instituted by Karl I of Austria~Hungary on 13 December 1916.  Unfortunately, like many other awards, most, if not nearly all, were struck in zinc due to wartime exigencies.

I particularly like the box.  It has a recess for the ribbon and the cross is complete and seemingly unworn.
