Husky43 Posted August 9, 2023 #1 Posted August 9, 2023 Can anyone tell me if this is a replica English Civil War helmet and, if so, is it cavalry pattern? Thank you.

Thank you. Hello Husky43. The helmet you have there is a 'try bar lobster pot' generally associated with 'Cromwellian' or 'Roundhead Cavalry' but was actually also worn by the 'Royalists' during the English Civil War. As the helmets were manufactured by hand they can vary a little in design but generally those made in England , as opposed to the European continent, were formed from two sections, joined by a raised comb running from front to back where as the skulls of helmets manufactured in Europe were most often raised from a single-piece of metal. So in short, you have a replica 'tri bar lobster pot' cavalry helmet. Gunner ...

Any idea what the metal loop at the top of the helmet was for? Thanks again.

You're spot in that the attachment at the back is a plume holder. The loop at the top of the crown is a 'suspension ring' used for carrying the helmet. Gunner
