Got this in the 80s from a newspaper add. Remember those? It's in really good shape. The mum just has what looks like a couple chisel marks on it, The butt plate is wood. The bayonet has never been sharpened. The sling was on it when I bought it but I don't think it is Japanese, but I don't know. No back story on it. Wish there was.

Hello Mark,

Your rifle was made at the Toriimatsu factory of the Nagoya Army Arsenal, and looks to from the eighth series, in the 35xxx serial range, as evidenced by the short fixed rear sight.  You are correct in that the sling is not Japanese.

The bayonet was made by Matsushita, a sub manufacturer of the Kokura Arsenal.

Like you, back in the 80's, I purchased several items through newspaper ads and "swap and shop" radio spots.

Nice items, thanks for sharing!
