Katana that I have had for a while

Bought this at auction in the 80s. Maybe you all can tell me what I have. Wooden scabbard with a leather cover. Nothing fancy as you can see. Never been brave enough to take the handle off to see if there are any markings. It has a little rust and the blade was used for something because it has a couple nicks in it. If there is someone in the St. Louis area that knows about these It would be neat to show it and get more info. Thanks Mark
