I signed up a few years ago and have not been on for quite awhile. With that said I cannot remember exactly what this hat device is but I do know that it is obviously Luftwaffe related. There is no tags or information on the sweat shield. Just want to know if the hat looks legit and what the value may be because it is for sale.

Luftzeugmeister hat. The general consensus is no visor cap ever existed for the Luftzeugmeister and that is actually a breast insignia. That being said the cap you posted is questionable.

I've seen discussions on this and a good post I found on another site that sort of sums it up is:

"The strangest thing of course about the Cogwheel device is that it is designed as a cap insignia with those prong pins on the back (as opposed to a conventional hinged catch-clasp arrangement, which you would expect to see on a "breast" badge or medal).
Perhaps it was originally intended as a hat badge but because these troops were issued field caps instead of visor caps the badges needed a new "use" and its application shifted to the jacket (??? left and right)....and after the war surplus cogwheels were discovered and used to restore/finish incomplete visor caps as it appeared to be a logical application...Who knows?...it will remain a mystery until period photos surface! but its not looking promising..."

In short, no period photographs so far showing the Cogwheel device on a Visor Cap.

Thanks,

James
