WW2az44 Posted September 30 #1 Posted September 30 Hi all I recently bought this for a mere 20 dollars, I have a small suspicion it’s fake because of the pin but not entirely certain. What do you think?
WW2az44 Posted September 30 Author #2 Posted September 30 Sorry I just realized miscategorized this. Any help identifying would be appreciated
easterneagle87 Posted September 30 #3 Posted September 30 Coastal Artillery badge. But I’m not one to say real or fake. The hallmarks aren’t really clear/crisp
Solution Preppy Picker Posted September 30 Solution #4 Posted September 30 I’m not a fan and here is why, primarily the back is pitted which indicates cast and these medals, especially made by FF&L, are known to be die struck. In addition the pin and catch do not look correct.

For 20 dollars it was a risk worth taking, I guess I’ll add it to the junk pile 😅

Mr.Jerry Posted October 30 #13 Posted October 30 There are some really good books out there on German badges, showing the various makers, and the correct markings, pins, hinges and catches for a particular time frame.

I will have to pick one up! Anyone in particular you recommend?
Steve Conway Posted October 31 #15 Posted October 31 If you want solid reliable advice on any German WW2 item Wehrmacht-awards.com is one of the best places to get it. The forum administrators are the guys that have written most of the great reference books available on German WW2 badges. They have other forums also but I wouldn't rate them as highly as the WW2 german ones. By the bye your badge looks like a cast badge which would immediately put it in the fake category, it also looks like it is made of lead or some similar soft material, if any solid WW2 German badge can be bent easily it is definitely fake, but for $20 I would say it wasn't a rip off - it just couldn't be genuine. Regards Steve
Danny J Posted October 31 #16 Posted October 31 Yes, I have been collecting some fantastic reference books, but not the german badge one, as yet

Mr.Jerry Posted November 19 #18 Posted November 19 German Combat Badges of the Third Reich Volume 1 & 2 (LW) not cheap, but worth it if it keeps you from buying even 1 fake badge.
