War in Pacific Posted April 25 #4 Posted April 25 Hi tituss, I'm finally looking for a type 90 helmet. Budget doesn't allow M90s as nice as yours. Was hoping you could give me some tips to weed out the good from the bad
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #6 Posted April 26 I'm looking at buying this Japanese M90 shell. It has Kanji inside on the front of the Helmet in black. Others I've seen have the Kanji in white inside the back of the helmet. Any information would be appreciated

War in Pacific Posted April 26 #8 Posted April 26 Thank you for that. I can send more pictures if that would help. I'm thinking it's difficult to judge authenticity through pictures. Is there anything I should look for which would differentiate real from fake? Appreciate your input
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #10 Posted April 26 Thank you tituss. You saved me from making a big mistake. Will I be safe focusing on helmets which have the star on them?
Preppy Picker Posted April 26 #11 Posted April 26 1 hour ago, tituss said: This helmet is not a type 90 but a civilian helmet Correct. Notice how much shallower the dome is and how wider the brim is.
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #12 Posted April 26 Thanks Preppy. Obviously I have some research to do

Preppy Picker Posted April 26 #14 Posted April 26 I’ve been where you are and make mistakes all the time. I tend to shoot first and figure it out later. That said I’m glad to help
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #15 Posted April 26 I did the same once before. Much rather learning prior to buying! 1 hour ago, tituss said: The star proves nothing, you can put a star on a civil defense helmet to make it a fake. Thx tituss. I figured that out when I ran across 'rebuild kits'. Makes it hard to know what's fake & what's not I'm thinking the attached has either been refurbished or is fake Does anyone have a reference to any book or article which I can educate myself?
Preppy Picker Posted April 26 #16 Posted April 26 If you know a real one fakes are easier to discern. The fake stars aren’t made the same way, there are subtle differences. The way things are stamped on the fabric or knowing what leather in a real Japanese helmet looks like after 80 plus years. These are only a few of the many clues to look for.
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #17 Posted April 26 Yup! Trick to it is finding that good one. Thanks Prepper Does anyone have a reference to any book or article which I can educate myself?
Mr. Bushido Posted April 26 #18 Posted April 26 A good starting point for judging this issue might be the apex vent. Most military helmets have four holes, while civilian helmets do not. However, some helmets are well modified, so this is just a rough guide.
War in Pacific Posted April 26 #19 Posted April 26 Apex vent are the 2 vent holes on top of helmet on both sides? They are not on the first helmet I posted. Good to know Thank you for that Mr. Bushido!

You can go to more militaria forums and go back to the very begining of their posts and read them up until the present, most are free, you'll probably learn more than reading from books that was a big part of my knowledge when I started collecting TR headgear a few years ago. You also might want to take LOTS OF NOTES.

Yes it is, and be very careful, there are a s@@t ton of different civil defense helmets, check the dealers sites. Go over to Griffin Militaria,Dan usually has a lot of CD lids that you can check out.
