ceg294 Posted January 21 #1 Posted January 21 DDR helmet I got when I was stationed in West Berlin, 1988-1990.
SARGE Posted January 21 #2 Posted January 21 These helmets were hard to get before the fall of the wall. Then cargo containers of them became redundant and available. You were in the right place at the right time.
bolo Posted October 28 #3 Posted October 28 back in the 1980's I remember ads in Shotgun News for these DDR East German helmets they use to cost over $200 each and use to be rare in the USA
qed4 Posted October 29 #4 Posted October 29 Then in the 1990s Sturms was selling them for $6.00 each. They have gone up now but I doubt we will see them for $200.00 again in our life time.
Allen0820 Posted October 29 #5 Posted October 29 Probably right ... I sold ...well just say lots of them for more or less than $20.00 ... If STURM STILL HAD THEM, I'd buy 100 of them ... Still it is not commonly found my collecting circles ... but before the "wall fell" they WERE RARE and brought big bux. "SHOTGUN NEWS" WOW ... I remember just waiting for the newest issues to be delivered ... ancient memories 😊
Marshallj Posted October 29 #6 Posted October 29 Ugliest helmet ever made. I think the Soviet’s purposely made them for the Germans as a constant reminder to the Germans that Germany lost the war.
qed4 Posted October 30 #7 Posted October 30 The helmet was actually designed by the Germans during WWII as a replacement for the M-42 but was too late to be put into production before the end of the war. The East Germans used the old design and the early ones have a WWII style liner. These early ones are fairly hard to find and will bring a premium the later ones not so much. I think there are still a lot of the later ones still around it is just that the dealers don't put them out and waist table space because they are not worth much and there is little interest.
jmd62 Posted October 30 #9 Posted October 30 Very cool! A buddy of mine landed an actual wartime prototype, very rare. Just a rusty shell, but pretty epic either way.
