Mac the Knife Posted February 18, 2025 #1 Posted February 18, 2025 Can anyone help me identify the branch of service of this Portuguese Badge? The green beret the badge is on is made of super heavy wool, and it's ribbon has been pulled. The beret is unmarked except for it's size. Thanks for any insight!

Beezman Posted February 20, 2025 #3 Posted February 20, 2025 Definitely an airborne beret from the colonial war era. Let me ask some people about the red background.
Mac the Knife Posted February 21, 2025 Author #4 Posted February 21, 2025 Thank you both! It came from a collection of "elite" unit berets. So, airborne would make sense.
Beezman Posted February 22, 2025 #5 Posted February 22, 2025 Well I talked to a bunch of Portuguese collectors and they have never seen anything like it (the red background). The badge is for the 1961-66 period, worn by paratroopers and air police (airborne troops belonged to the Air Force).
Solution Beezman Posted February 27, 2025 Solution #6 Posted February 27, 2025 Some people have suggested that the red background could be for the airborne instructors of the AIrborne Special Groups. But not everyone agrees!
Mac the Knife Posted March 3, 2025 Author #7 Posted March 3, 2025 Beezman, Thank you for your follow-up and for asking your contacts! There is so much out there, we can't be expert on them all!
