As other members have pointed out, these characters are katakana.

 

They're probably the Japanese translation of an English-speaking male name.

 

I'm not sure how exactly it's written, but it's pronounced something like "Re i     /    Ba su co n se ro su".

As usual your skills are amazing. The opposite side of this USMC VMA-224 lighter is engraved with the pilot's name: Ray Vasconcellos. It dates to a 1957 deployment to Iwakuni. Thanks for confirming the Japanese characters for me.
