JeanH Posted May 22, 2025 #1 Posted May 22, 2025 In the process of writing bios & organizing my Dad's (B-17 rop POW) and Uncle's (B-24 pilot KIA) military "stuff", I came across something I hadn't seen before, but matches items online identified as a "Pre-WWI C.G. Haenel Suhl German Bayonet". However, the engraving is only "G. Haenel Suhl" - not C. G. Haenel Suhl. Wondering what that means as far as coming to a correct ID? It has some other marks that I can't quite identify. TIA - Jean H
Solution Richie B Posted May 23, 2025 Solution #2 Posted May 23, 2025 German S [Seitengewehr] 98. Made in 1907. I suspect the C in C G Haenel has worn off over the years. The small stamps are inspection marks - a Crown over a Fraktur character.

I was a little skeptical, but dug out my extra strong mag glass and sure enough - it's faint, but (knowing what to look for) you can see the bottom curve of a 'C' and a faint '.' (period) Took another pic in better light, and captured the 'C' and you can also see sort of a "scrape" - although can't really see anything on the scabbard opening that would have worn off the 'C' but left the 'G' in such good shape. Thanks again! Jean
