LE LOUP DES MERS Posted July 7, 2025 #1 Posted July 7, 2025 I know the US used green duck tape or black electric tape for taping mags. But what type of tape did the NVA/Viet Cong use (if it even was tape)? I know I have seen pictures of NVA and Viet Cong soldiers with jungle style AK mags but can't tell what they used to tape the magazine. All the photos I have seen were in black and white so it's a little hard to tell.
triplecanopy Posted July 7, 2025 #2 Posted July 7, 2025 As a Vietnam Vet (1970-71) and from personal experience, I never observed or even heard of an NVA soldier carrying taped together magazines. The basic load for an NVA was four 30 round magazines- one in the weapon (AK-47 or AKM) and three in a chest vest. Two 30 round mags taped together might seem to be advantageous, but to me at least it is not practical. It would be awkward and heavy. Some weapons that are lighter (M1 Carbine, Swedish K, MP40) it might work. out. Now some might disagree with a different perspective, that's OK.
LE LOUP DES MERS Posted July 8, 2025 Author #3 Posted July 8, 2025 I double checked the black and white photos I saw, yeah I think they are Russian soldiers not NVA. I know the Russians did use blue electrical tape on there AKs. But as I was looking at NVA I didn't see one with taped ak mags. Now I'm still willing to bet at least one NVA private or Viet Cong guy probably did tape mags together but it probably wasn't common like the Soviets did.

LE LOUP DES MERS Posted July 14, 2025 Author #5 Posted July 14, 2025 Yeah it does look like the rubber tube part for a VC sandal. I think my plan is to use dark green duct tape or reproduction vc style sandal tube. Option 1 If I use duct tape my reasoning will be: some NVA/VC guy captured a roll of us dark green duct tape and used it for his mags. Not sure if that's historically correct but if that's the only option i got. Might as well have fun with it and make a story out of it. Or I guess I could reverse it and say a navy seal or macv guy captured an ak and used green duct tape he had on hand. I got a Chinese ak47 rubber duck and I want to attach a real ak mag using the "jungle style" method for looks when displayed on my wall. Or option 2 I could buy a reproduction sandal rubber tube. If I do the duct tape method, to keep it from ruining the rubber duck and the ak mag. I'll use electric tape first then go over the electrical tape with a layer of the dark green duct tape to prevent the sticky residue from ruining duck and the mag. The first photo looks like he used electrical tape but it's hard to tell. I'm not even sure if electrical tape was even available for the VC/NVA army at that time without capturing a roll off an American.
LE LOUP DES MERS Posted August 4, 2025 Author #6 Posted August 4, 2025 I wasn't able to find reproduction VC sandal tube. So I used electrical tape with duck tape. Unfortunately the electrical tape isn't really doing a good job holding the mag together. It's holding it together but its also easy to move back and forth. I may have to just use the green duck tape but I also don't what to ruin the mag or rubber with sticky residue. If anyone knows where I could find reproduction sandal tube let me know. I used a Romanian ak mag with 6 dummy ak rounds to give it that look. I then bought a Chinese type 56 sling and rigged it up the best I could. Some ak rubber ducks have sling mounts and some don't unfortunately this one doesn't. If the rubber duck wasn't Vietnam era i wouldn't feel so bad and I would just use the duck tape.
